STAYTON----From blues to belly dancing, the stage at Santiam SummerFest had something for everyone. Andy McGarrett, a disc jockey from KCKX radio started the day and broadcast the entertainment live. Young and old swayed to the rhythm of Raks Sarama, a tribal style Middle Eastern dance and drumming troupe.

Kathy Perry showed her appreciation with a zaghareet, a la-la sound made under a covered mouth. "It's meant to be heard," she said. And when things are slow, fans let out a hissing sound to show they like the performance. "I love to dance," Perry said. "I've been a dancer myself."

Patricia Arreola is from Salem and had never been to SummerFest. She enjoyed Raks Sarama's dancing and music. "It made you want to get up there and dance on stage," she said. "It gave you energy."

And thatŐs the idea behind Raks Sarama.

"We would like to feel inspiring to people," member Connie Johnston said, "to feel like anybody can do that."
